KEEN TO BE GREEN
We love our community but we want it to be remain healthy in the future so that the next generation can also enjoy it. In the Baldoyle Community Hall we practice ways to keep our carbon footprint to a minimum while trying to maintain a quality experience for visitors.
OUR GREEN WAYS
Waste
Avoiding printing where possible and reusing paper for notes
Fixing pens and using pens donated to the centre
Buying second hand furniture for the office and on the green space
Reusing cardboard on the garden and donating to allotment holders
Putting all food waste into the wormery – compost is used in the flower pots
Waste fabric, batteries, plastic, metal, electrical equipment, wood and paper are given to a recycling companies
Recycled Paint is purchased from the Rediscovery centre
Plastic soap bottles are refilled
Plastic cleaning bottles are refilled
A party box of reusable plates, cups and cutlery is kept for hire
Leaves are collected into a Leaf Compost cage
Cleaning products
70% of the cleaning products are made in the centre using natural products such as vinegar, lemon juice and essential oils
Cloths are washed and reused and no disposable cleaning cloths are purchased
Water
Use of water in the toilets is minimised using blocks in the cisterns
Water is collected in 2 water butts and used for the garden or for outdoor cleaning
Transport
Bike and Scooter racks have been set up around the centre
In 2024 we introduced a bonus payment for staff who don’t bring their car to work, paid at Christmas
Energy
Signs have been placed around the centre reminding people to switch off the lights when leaving
Small portable heaters for under the desk have been purchased for use by staff when they are the only people upstairs – reducing the need for the general heating
Our boat shed has been insulated on all exposed surfaces dramatically reducing its heating costs
Triple glazed windows have been installed throughout the main building and upgraded emergency doors have been replaced
Biodiversity and Animals
Well behaved animals are welcome in the Baldoyle Community Hall
A sedum roof has been placed on the Boat Shed which supports bird and insect life
Bird boxes have been set up in the bushes and on the trees
An area of ‘Long Grass’ has been established on the green space
Fruit trees have been planted on the green space
Members work with Coast Watch Eu to monitor the stretch of the Baldoyle Bay that borders the centre
Education
We have run workshops, events or classes on Wetlands, the Baldoyle Bay, Climate Change, care for animals, foraging, sustainable fashion, biodegradable decorations for Halloween and Sustainable Gardening
We helped to set up the Baldoyle Wild Towns and continue to support them
We train staff on employment programmes and volunteers to use more sustainable practices
We support and encourage integration and mutual support of all people in the community through example and through events
